In the event of a hurricane or other public health emergency, many residents may experience a delay receiving outside assistance. To address this issue, local senior centers are joining Ledge Light Health District in assembling 72-Hour Home Emergency Kits that will be distributed before an emergency happens.
“We’re asking community members to help by donating supplies needed to keep people safe and comfortable in their homes during and after an emergency, said Heather Kozlowski, Ledge Light Health District’s medical reserve corps coordinator. “If, for example, a hurricane hits and emergency help is not available for three days, the supplies in this kit will support people so they can function normally until help is provided or services can be restored.”
The Ledge Light Health District is asking local businesses and residents to donate goods that are typically included in an emergency kit. These supplies include storage containers, duffle bags, bottled water, canned food, can openers, canned juice, blankets, flashlights, batteries, radios, candles, first aid supplies, duct tape, and pet food.
“Things we normally take for granted can be a lifesaver in an emergency situation,” said Kozlowski.
Local senior centers will serve as donation sites throughout the community. They will be accepting donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 29. The kits will be assembled by the Ledge Light Health District’s medical reserve corp volunteers, and the senior center directors will distribute the kits to individuals in the community who have the greatest need for support.
“As a public health department, it is our responsibility to prevent disease, illness, and injury. Distributing emergency kits to residents who would not otherwise be prepared in an emergency is a perfect example of public health at work in our community,” adds Kozlowski.
