Biggest
Accomplishments: North Haven achieved one of
its primary goals by returning to the state tournament, marking the seventh
time in DeBaise’s 11 seasons that the Indians have done so. Along that road,
North Haven recorded some key victories, such as avenging an early loss to
Branford by blanking the Hornets 3-0 in the rematch and sweeping Oronoque foe East Haven—all victories that helped the Indians improve
upon last year’s 3-5 finish in the division and earn second place. North Haven’s regular season then culminated with a
Senior Night triumph versus Foran as senior captain Chelsea Shaw scored the
winning goal. DeBaise also noted the fact that two freshmen and three sophomores
started for his squad, thus providing experience that will likely continue to
pay off next fall.
Postseason Awards: Three
Indians earned their first-ever All-Oronoque honors—Shaw, junior goalkeeper
Maria Sanzari (7-2-1 record, 89.4 save percentage, five shutouts), and
sophomore attacking midfielder Jessica Broadbent (nine goals, four assists).
Next Year’s Outlook:
North Haven has a lot of defenders to replace
next year as the team will look to again make states and win the Oronoque crown
it captured from 2004 to 2006. Returning for the Indians in that effort will be
soon-to-be-seniors Jaclyn Ranciato (stopper), Sarah McGovern (attacker),
Shabnam Elahi (midfielder/defender), and Sanzari; plus Amanda Rizzo (outside
midfielder), Clare Hannon (midfielder), Sam Tabak (goalkeeper), Caitlyn Shaw
(attacker, six goals, five assists), and Broadbent, who will be juniors; as
well as soon-to-be-sophomores Lindsay Hewitt (attacker/outside midfielder, six
goals) and Samantha Cristante (midfielder).
