The HK girls’ swimming team put together a 4-4
regular-season record to capture fifth place in the Nutmeg Conference, which
was formed to accommodate schools that belong to a larger conference with no
other swimming programs in that conference so the teams can have a conference
championship.
Celia Marcum and Emma Wing were the senior captains of the
team, while senior Dina Grimaldi brought leadership as well. The Cougars
qualified several athletes for the Class S meet where they finished 16th of the
30 teams competing with 132 points, just five points behind 15th-place Windsor
Locks/Ellington.
At the state meet held on Nov. 12, the 400 freestyle relay
team of junior Madison Haynosch, Grimaldi, junior Jennifer Thayer, junior
Heather Kinney took 13th (4:11.12), and both the 200 medley relay team of
Haynosch, Grimaldi, Kinney, and sophomore Katie Faust (2:08.57) and the 200
freestyle relay team of Kinney, Faust, junior Laura Parzyck, and Thayer placed
16th (1:55.81).
Strong individual performances were turned in by Faust took
15th in the 100 freestyle (58.96) and 19th in the 200 IM (2:28.20) with
personal-bests in each event. Marcum took fifth in the one-meter diving event
with 313.6 points and Haynosch placed 14th in the 500 freestyle with a
season-best time of 5:51.81.
